Meet Your Teacher:

Ashley Denton

Hi, lovebugs! I’m Ashley!

Since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated by the miracle of life. I loved seeing women from all walks of life waddle around with their beautiful round bellies as people in passing smiled and doted on them. “When are you due?”, “You are glowing!”, “Do you know what you’re having?” “Do you need anything?”

I was always curious how it felt to carry life. I imagined all of the crazy craving combinations moms-to-be would come up with. And I wondered about all the different variations of pregnancy symptoms. (I wish someone had warned me about PUPPP though!) I’ve celebrated many pregnancies with many women over the course of my life, and it was a thrill when I finally began being able to celebrate my own.

My love and fascination for all things pregnancy, birth and motherhood took a turn when I learned two things:

  • We’re in the middle of a crisis. The maternal mortality rate is abnormally high for a country as developed and advanced as the United States. Women of color are 3-4x more likely to die than white women. And more than 80% of pregnancy related deaths are preventable! NEWSFLASH: WE ARE ALL AT RISK!

  • Most women are not receiving the information they need to know what’s happening to their bodies throughout pregnancy, what their medical care should look like, what to expect in labor/birth, what all of their options are and vital care needed during postpartum

Seriously, we’re in the middle of a crisis.

Don’t believe me?

“Your intuition does not know better than my 30 years of experience!”

That’s what an OBGYN said to me in his effort to scare me into a c-section when I was in labor with my first baby. What he failed to realize is that I wasn’t just armed with my intuition but facts, statistics, questions and the empowerment to advocate for myself!

And I made sure that man’s scalpel never touched me…

Years ago, I felt pulled into the world of birth in a more “official” capacity. I knew that doulas were having a profound impact on preventing negative birth outcomes. I also knew that if women had more education available to them, they’d be able to do three important things:

Advocate for themselves with confidence

Use the knowledge of birth to their advantage

Set aside their fears and have an empowering birth

So, I got certified as a doula and childbirth educator.

Then, I got to work.

I took on clients immediately and fell in love with my mamas and the way I get to serve them. We cry together, we pray together, we meditate together, we laugh together and we grieve together.

I’ve experienced almost every kind of birth possible,

including my own: unmedicated vaginal, medicated vaginal, c-sections, emergency c-sections, three methods of inductions, hospital births, home births and births supported by OBGYNs and midwives.

I felt called to this work, and after answering the call, I realized how vital it truly is. There’s a lot of important information that women NEED to know about their bodies, their baby and their options. It can literally be the difference between life and death.
